Block wall questions
- How many blocks per square foot of wall?
- A standard 8 × 8 × 16 block covers 128 square inches with its mortar joints, so a wall needs 1.125 blocks per square foot of face. The calculator adds 5% for cuts and breakage.
- Do I need a permit for a block fence in Florida?
- Usually, yes. Most Florida cities and counties permit masonry fences and walls, and many require signed-and-sealed engineering above a certain height. The height limit and the setback rules are local, so verify with your city's building department before you order block.
- How much rebar goes in a block wall?
- The engineered design sets it. A common pattern for a garden wall is a vertical bar in a grouted cell every 32 or 48 inches, bars at each end and at gates, dowels lapped into the footing, and a bond beam with horizontal steel at the top. In the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone the spacing is often tighter.
- What size footing does a block wall need?
- It depends on the wall height, the wind load and the soil. The calculator starts at 16 inches wide by 12 inches deep as a take-off assumption for a 6 ft wall; the engineering for your permit gives the real dimensions and the steel in it.
