Paver questions
- How much waste should I add for pavers?
- It depends on the pattern. A running bond or stack bond wastes about 5% in cuts, a random or ashlar pattern about 7%, and a herringbone or basketweave about 10% because every edge is a diagonal cut. Curves and many corners push it higher.
- How deep should the base be under pavers?
- Pool decks, patios and walkways are usually built on about 4 inches of compacted crushed rock with 1 inch of bedding sand on top. Driveways need 6 to 8 inches, deeper for trucks or soft ground. Base rock is ordered loose, so order about 20% more than the compacted volume.
- Travertine or concrete pavers around a pool?
- Travertine stays cooler underfoot and looks like stone because it is, but it can etch and pit around saltwater pools. Concrete pavers cost less, come in more sizes and shrug off pool water. Both should be sealed, and the coping around the pool is a separate piece either way.
- Do I need a permit for a paver pool deck in Florida?
- Repairing or overlaying an existing deck usually does not need one, but a new deck, a larger footprint or anything that touches the pool barrier can. After the work the barrier — fence, self-closing gates, door alarms — must still meet Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act. Verify with your city's building department.
